Jamie Wilson with Jack Maple, Gavin Kalin and Jason Haigh-Ellery present The Curve production of ‘An Officer and a Gentleman. The book by Douglas Day Stewart and Sharleen Cooper Cohen and directed by Nikolai Foster.

For those of us of a certain age will not need an introduction to this classic story and movie; and for those who have never experienced ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’ this will cascade you back to what is now a bygone era. It is a 1982 romantic drama film directed by Taylor Hackford and the story follows Zack Mayo, a young man who enlists in the U.S. Navy's Officer Candidate School to become a naval aviator. Throughout his training, Zack faces challenges and personal demons, including a difficult relationship with his drill instructor, Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley. Along the way, he falls in love with a local woman named Paula, who works at a local factory. The film explores themes of love, class, and personal growth as Zack navigates his journey to become both an officer and a gentleman.

Now this captivating story has been rejuvenated and has hit the stage arriving in Birmingham with much excitement, enthusiasm and anticipation.

’An Officer and a Gentleman’ is a captivating theatre stage play that beautifully translates the iconic story from screen to stage. Set against the backdrop of a rigorous naval training academy, the production takes the audience on an emotional journey filled with love, sacrifice, and redemption.

The performances by the cast are nothing short of extraordinary, with each actor bringing depth and authenticity to their characters. The chemistry between the leads resonates throughout the theatre, drawing the audience into their tumultuous journey.

The stage design is both visually stunning and versatile, seamlessly transitioning between various settings from the training grounds to intimate moments of vulnerability. The use of lighting and sound enhances the mood and atmosphere, effectively transporting the audience into the world of the story. Throughout the performance it is crammed with only brief snippets of eighties classic hits from Bon Jovi’s ‘Livin’ on Prayer’ to Blondie’s ‘Heart of Glass’ to Madonna’s iconic ‘Material Girl.’ Music makes the world go round and this score leaves you wanting more and heading for the download button!

A word of caution that the production contains themes and references to suicide, haze, smoke and flashing lights.

What truly sets ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’ apart is its ability to explore complex themes such as honor, ambition, and the pursuit of dreams. It offers moments of laughter, tears, and introspection, leaving a lasting impact on the hearts of those who experience it. However, I did feel the finale could have been increased in length and to a greater extent a more powerful, choreographed dance and song routine - “🎵🎶 lift us up where we belong”

The characters are richly developed, each contributing to the narrative's depth and emotional resonance. Zack Mayo (Luke Baker) the protagonist, a troubled young man with a troubled past, joins the Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School to find direction and purpose in his life developed a strong character rapport with Paula Pokrifki (Georgia Lennon), a local factory worker with dreams of escaping her small-town life. Paula becomes romantically involved with Zack and challenges him to confront his inner demons. Personally I enjoyed the performance of Sgt. Emil Foley (Jamal Crawford); the tough and relentless drill instructor at the Officer Candidate School, Sgt. Foley pushes Zack and his fellow candidates to their limits in order to mold them into capable officers. He graced the boards with an air of authority interspersed with elements of humour which the audience enjoyed.

These characters, brought to life through compelling performances, navigate themes of love, loyalty, and personal growth against the backdrop of military training and relationships. Their interactions drive the story forward, exploring the complexities of human nature and the pursuit of excellence in the face of adversity.

Overall,  ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’ is a triumphant ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ theatrical production that captures the essence of the beloved film while adding its own unique flair. It is a must-see for theatre enthusiasts and fans of the original story alike.
