Hairspray comes to Birminghams Hippodrome and has a “hold” on the audience
Review By Lauren Brathwaite - 18th September 2024
Nostalgia. One of the many words I'd used to describe how I felt watching this show. It took me back to the many times I used to watch the film over a decade ago singing and dancing along like I was on TV with them. Hairspray is a classic. Based on John Waters 1988 film, the musical takes us to Baltimore in the 60's following the life of Tracy Turnblad and her dream to dance on the “Corny Collins Show”, marking a turning point by bringing racial intergration to national TV.
The story is told through a perfect blend of 1960's dance and “downtown” r&b with influences of pop, rock and soul which had the audience singing and clapping along. I even found myself singing to songs I didn't know I still remembered after not having seen the film in such a long time. Drew Mconies choreography was nothing short of amazing so energetic and exciting you couldn't help but dart your eyes around to get a glimpse of everyone on stage clearly in their element.
Alexandra Emmerson-Kirby made her professional debut as Tracy Turnblad and what a debut it was! From the moment she woke up she graced the stage with her fun, loveable and bubbly personality and outstanding vocals match . Her best friend Penny was played by Freya Mcmahon who also made her professional debut in the musical. I couldn't help but look around for Penny when she was onstage during a song - her lack of rhythm and ditzy ways always made for a giggle and just made her that much more likeable. An amazing debut from them both.
The show had heaps of comedic factor - but the best moments were those between Edna (Neil Hurst) and Wilbur (Demot Canavan) Turnblad. Their duet of “You're Timeless to Me” was full of perfectly timed one liners. From Ednas reference to “feeling the bells” when Wibur was holding her from behind, his response of “do you want me to stand back” had both the audience and the actors in minutes of laughter - followed by various other one liners that even they had to take a moment to laugh off it was nothing short of hilarious.
For me Motormouth Maybelle (Michelle Ndegwa) stole the show with her soulful powerhouse vocals. A dazzling voice with dazzlings outfits and perfect blonde curls- you couldn't look away. “We can't get lazy when things get crazy” was a quote from her that stuck with me when she was speaking on racial injustice and intregration - a message that is still very much relevant today. Overall Hairspray is a musical masterpiece, overtime it has only gotten better and still portrays the strong messages it aimed to all those years ago. If you have yet to see this musical I can't recommend it enough and if you already have - chances are you want to see it again because I know I do.
A five star show.
