Jack is tricked and trades Dave for a handful of fake golden coins, which transpire are beans, much to his mother's dismay. Overnight, a gigantic beanstalk, reaching high into the clouds after the beans were disguarded into the garden. Jack climbs the beanstalk and discovers a magical kingdom ruled by a fearsome, greedy giant who hoards gold and treasures. Filled with humour, adventure, and heart, the tale reinforces the message that courage and kindness can conquer even the greatest challenges.
The main character of Jack and the Beanstalk is Jack, a brave and resourceful young hero with a kind heart and an adventurous spirit. Living in the humble village of Merrydale with his mother, Dame Trott, Jack dreams of a better life for his family. Despite his initial naivety in trading their cow, Dave, for fake gold coins, Jack quickly rises to the challenge when faced with the beanstalk and the giant's kingdom above the clouds. His determination, quick thinking, and courage drive the story as he, his brother Billy (Ben Thornton) and Dame Trott climb the towering beanstalk and confront the fearsome giant. Jack's loyalty to his loved ones and his willingness to take risks for the greater good make him a classic panto hero that audiences can root for.
Special mention to the professionalism of Sam Rabone (Dame Trott) and Ben Thornton (Billy) displaying an air of quality panto acting combining energy, charm, and impeccable timing to create a magical experience for audiences of all ages. The pair create a balance of exaggerated characters and slapstick humour with heartfelt moments that resonate emotionally. The mastery of audience interaction is key; with witty asides and encouraging lively participation. A strong panto pair of performers thriving on adaptability, reacting to the crowd's energy while keeping the story moving seamlessly. Above all, they deliver performances full of joy and authenticity, ensuring that every laugh, gasp, and cheer feels genuine and unforgettable.
The villain, the fearsome Giant, who we are led to believe is a greedy and menacing character who lives high above the clouds in a magical kingdom. However, at The Garrick the villain is none other than the Giant's henchman, Luke Backinanger! Portrayed as loud and intimidating, with his booming voice and larger-than-life presence in the story. Despite his terrifying demeanor, Luke Backinanger is outwitted by Jack, whose courage and cleverness prove too much for the hulking villain. In classic pantomime style, 'Backinanger's' bluster is balanced with humour, ensuring that while he's a formidable foe, he's also an entertaining one.
The set is a visual spectacle that brings the magical world of the story to life. It transitions seamlessly between the humble charm of the village, with its rustic cottages and market square, to the towering grandeur of the Giant's kingdom above the clouds. The centerpiece is, of course, the iconic beanstalk, which dramatically grows on stage, captivating the audience with its size and intricate details. The Giant's castle is depicted as a vast, and imposing structure, emphasizing the contrast between Jack's small stature and the Giant's world. Vibrant lighting, whimsical backdrops, and clever special effects, such as swirling mist and sparkling magic beans, further enhance the enchanting atmosphere. The set creates an immersive experience, drawing audiences into a world where anything feels possible.
The moral is centered around bravery, perseverance, and the triumph of good over greed. Jack's journey teaches that courage and resourcefulness can overcome even the most daunting challenges, such as facing a fearsome giant and villain Luke Backinanger. The story also underscores the importance of kindness, as Jack's actions are driven by his desire to help his struggling family and his community. Additionally, it warns against selfishness and greed, exemplified by the Giant's hoarding of wealth at the expense of others. Ultimately, the tale reminds audiences that acts of bravery, selflessness, and determination can lead to great rewards and inspire positive change.
