Local election candidate list

All the candidates standing in the 2022 Solihull local elections

Tom Cramp - Local Democracy Reporter | Friday 8th April 2022 11:31am

58 candidates are set to battle it out for a seat on Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council in this year's local election. A third of the council's seats are up for grabs, meaning each of Solihull's 17 wards will have one seat contested.

Votes will be cast on Thursday, May 5 between 7am and 10pm, with the count set to take place at North Solihull Sports Centre in Chelmsley Wood from 9am on Friday, May 6. The council expects results to come in “around lunchtime – approximately 1pm”.

Solihull MBC has had a Conservative majority since 2011, currently holding 30 of the 51 available seats. The Green Party are the main opposition with 12 seats, while Labour has zero presence within Solihull MBC.

The only remaining two Labour councillors, Cllr David Cole and Cllr Marcus Brain, defected to the Conservatives and to the Greens respectively at the end of 2021. There are also three Liberal Democrats and five independents.

High-profile councillors who will be looking to retain their seats include the Leader of the Council Cllr Ian Courts who represents Dorridge and Hockley Heath, and Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Education, Children and Skills Cllr Richard Holt who holds the seat in Blythe. The Elmdon seat belonging to the Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group Cllr Laura McCarthy is also up.
