St Alphege Musical Production Society presents 'Our House,' The Madness Musical! By Tim Firth, music and lyrics by Madness, direction and choreography by Robert Bateman and musical direction by Phil Ypres-Smith.

'Our House' is a British musical that combines the songs of the ska/pop band Madness with a story about choices, consequences, and family. The plot centres on Joe Casey (Dylan Norris), a young man who, on his sixteenth birthday, faces a critical decision that changes the course of his life. The story explores two parallel universes, one where Joe makes a good choice and one where he makes a bad one, illustrating the contrasting paths that arise from a single moment. Through Joe's journey, 'Our House' addresses themes of love, loyalty, and the challenges of growing up. The musical is known for its energetic choreography and hit songs like “It Must Be Love” and “Baggy Trousers,” adding humour and vibrancy to the narrative. With a blend of nostalgia and universal themes, 'Our House' engages audiences of all ages, offering both an entertaining and thought-provoking experience.

The cast of 'Our House' brings vibrant energy and depth to this story inspired by Madness' iconic music. Performed with passion and led by the character of Joe Casey (Dylan Norris); supported by Sarah (Melanie Bateman), Emmo (Devlin Young), Lewis (Robert Bateman), Billie (Katie Elliot) and Angie (Emily Hilton). Joe, whose life splits into two parallel paths after a critical choice, the actors explore the themes of fate, consequence, and self-discovery. The ensemble captures the charm and grit of London, with each performer bringing distinct characters to life, from friends and family to foes. Their chemistry and versatility shine in scenes packed with humor, emotion, and infectious Madness songs like “House of Fun” and “Our House,” making for an engaging, dynamic performance. Special mention to Katie Elliot and Emily Holtom for their outstanding and energetic performance, which truly brought the characters to life.

“Choices, chances, and chart-topping tunes!”

The music in 'Our House' is central to the show's appeal, featuring the iconic hits of Madness, a band known for its lively ska and pop rhythms and distinctive storytelling style. Songs like “Our House,” “It Must Be Love,” “Baggy Trousers,” and “House of Fun” bring energy and a nostalgic quality that enhances the play's exploration of youthful choices and consequences. Each song is carefully woven into the storyline to reflect Joe's emotional journey, his relationships, and the pivotal decisions he faces. Madness's music not only provides a soundtrack but also drives the narrative forward, capturing both the highs and lows of Joe's parallel lives. This integration of music and story creates an immersive experience that resonates with the audience, making 'Our House' a unique blend of musical theatre and popular music nostalgia.

Yes, I would recommend 'Our House,' especially if you enjoy musicals with a mix of humour, energy, and a thought-provoking storyline. However, I was a little disappointed to hear a snippet of Melanie Bateman's (Sarah) voice performing a solo during the latter stages of Act 1; that said I was pleasantly rewarded with several solo numbers during Act 2 which delighted both the audience and myself! The play has a unique structure that explores parallel realities, which keeps the story engaging as it examines how one choice can shape a life in very different ways. The music by Madness adds a lively and nostalgic atmosphere, with songs that many people already know and love. It's also visually dynamic, with choreography that complements the upbeat ska/pop tunes.

A word of caution that the performance contains some mild language, flashing lights and smoke haze.

'Our House' has something for everyone—music fans, those who enjoy reflective storytelling, and people who appreciate British humour and charm. It's a great choice for anyone looking for an entertaining night out with a bit of depth. 'Our House' is currently at The Crescent Theatre until the 16th November and tickets are available online or direct from the box office.

“Parallel paths, powerful possibilities!”
