Peter Pan Goes Wrong
The Alexandra Theatre

18 - 23 March 2024
Kenny Wax Ltd and Stage Presence Ltd present the Mischief Production 'Peter Pan Goes Wrong,' adapted from the original stage play by J.M. Barrie.
How many times do we hear 'won't you grow up!' A phrase often directed at children yet often referred to adults alike. So for me 'Peter Pan Goes Wrong' is the perfect production about the boy who still 'won't grow up!'
The adventure takes the children Wendy (Sandra Wilkinson), John (Dennis Tyde) and Michael (Max Bennett) on a journey; along the way encountering pirates, creatures, fairies and a 'snapping' crocodile all in the company of Peter Pan (Jonathan Harris) with Wendy at the helm taking on and becoming the mother figure role.
What could possibly go wrong is an understatement and I say in life 'always expect the unexpected' and you certainly have to with this production. Chaos, carnage and mayhem reign high in this hilarious adaptation of the classic novel which leaves you in awe as the cast encounter a journey of sheer disarray, disorder and pandemonium!
''Peter Pan Goes Wrong' is a delightful and uproarious stage play that brilliantly combines the charm of J.M. Barrie's classic tale with the chaos of a comedic disaster. The production flawlessly weaves slapstick humor, witty dialogue, and impeccable timing to create a riotous experience for audiences of all ages. The cast's impeccable comedic timing and physicality bring the bumbling characters to life, keeping the audience in stitches from start to finish. The seamless integration of technical mishaps adds an extra layer of hilarity, as the performers navigate their way through the mayhem with hilarious improvisation.
A non stop journey of classic British slapstick comedy, reminiscent of the days of Morecambe and Wise. The play employs classic slapstick techniques such as physical mishaps, exaggerated movements, and comically timed accidents. These elements appeal to both children and adults, evoking laughter through their sheer silliness. The parody of the original story pokes fun at the beloved tale of Peter Pan, the play adds a fresh, humorous twist to familiar characters and plot points. Audiences familiar with the original story will appreciate the clever references and comedic reinterpretations. The play cleverly incorporates meta-humor by acknowledging its own status as a theatrical production. Characters comment on the stagecraft, or react to unexpected mishaps, inviting the audience to laugh along with the performers. When things inevitably go wrong on stage (as the title suggests), the actors improvise their way out of the chaos. These spontaneous moments of adaptation add an element of unpredictability and spontaneity to the performance, eliciting genuine laughter from the audience.
The characters in 'Peter Pan Goes Wrong' are exaggerated and caricatured versions of their counterparts in the original story. Their larger-than-life personalities, coupled with their incompetence and bumbling antics, contribute to the comedic atmosphere of the play. Credit must go to and a sterling performance in dual roles from Chris Bean (George Darling/Hook) and Robert Grove (Nana the Dog/Co-Director) who engaged the audience from the onset to the finale of the performance. Special mention to Francis Beaumont (Narrator/Cecco) who was flamboyant and absolutely charming to watch added a comedic air of authority!
The stage set of "Peter Pan Goes Wrong" is ingeniously designed to enhance the comedic chaos of the production. It features a revolving set and a charmingly flawed representation of the bedroom, Hooks ship and Neverland, complete with whimsical props, makeshift scenery, and cleverly disguised technical malfunctions. The set appears deceptively simple at first glance, but as the play progresses, it becomes increasingly evident that nothing is quite as it seems. From malfunctioning flying rigs to collapsing backdrops, the set serves as a dynamic playground for the performers to navigate through the comedic mishaps with hilarious improvisation. Each element of the set contributes to the overall comedic atmosphere, creating a visually engaging and uproariously entertaining experience for the audience.
Overall, 'Peter Pan Goes Wrong' is a must-see theatrical gem that guarantees an evening of non-stop laughter and entertainment. It combines these elements to create a hilarious and entertaining theatrical experience that keeps audiences laughing from start to finish.
