If like me you studied Susan Hill's 'The Woman in Black' at school you will be familiar with the suspense and tension that builds throughout this novel. First published in 1983 and set in an isolated house, surrounded by marshland near a small village in the Edwardian era, has captivated audiences from its television airing on ITV in 1989 starring Adrian Rawlins as Arthur Kidd (and not Kipps), to the 2012 silver screen movie featuring Daniel Radcliffe and of course the successful stage production at The Fortune Theatre, London running from 1989 to March 2023; the theatrical adaptation renowned for effectively scaring audiences!

'The Woman in Black' is a gripping stage show that delivers spine-tingling suspense and an eerie atmosphere from start to finish. Based on Susan Hill's novel, adapted by Stephen Mallatratt and features Malcolm James (Arthur Kipps), Mark Hawkins (The Actor) and directed by Robin Herford masterfully weaves a tale of mystery and terror that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.

Although I felt the production was slow to start, it rapidly increased the tension to the final closing moments delivered eloquently by the cast and by the use of stage smoke, sudden loud noises and sound effects created a stirring atmosphere!

The minimalist set design, and 'the action takes place in this Theatre in the early 1950s' and clever use of lighting create a haunting ambiance, enhancing the sense of foreboding throughout the performance. The narrative unfolds through the recounting of a chilling ghost story, drawing viewers into a world filled with secrets and supernatural occurrences.

What truly sets 'The Woman in Black' apart is its ability to captivate the audience's imagination. With only two actors carrying the entire weight of the production, the performances are nothing short of mesmerizing. The chemistry between the characters is palpable, adding depth to the unfolding mystery.

As the plot thickens and the tension mounts, every creak and whisper becomes laden with significance, heightening the sense of dread. The play's clever twists and turns keep viewers guessing until the very end, leaving them breathless and spellbound.

Overall, 'The Woman in Black' is a theatrical masterpiece that seamlessly blends psychological horror with theatrical ingenuity. It's a must-see ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ performance for anyone craving an unforgettable night of suspense and intrigue on the stage.

'The Woman in Black' is at The Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham until the 10th February 2024, with tickets available online at www.atgtickets.com
