Who's who of councillors

Every member of Solihull Council after last week's local elections

Tom Cramp - Local Democracy Reporter | Wednesday 10th May 2023 4:01pm

The local election in Solihull last week was a positive one for the Conservatives as the ruling party added two extra seats to its majority. The Liberal Democrats also gained a seat, while the Green Party opposition did not get the result it hoped for, coming away with one fewer.

In what was a surprisingly successful day for the local Tories considering the party's performance elsewhere in the country, they won former Green Party and independent seats in Castle Bromwich, Kingshurst & Fordbridge, and Knowle.

The Liberal Democrats hit back in Olton, removing the former Conservative chair of the planning committee Cllr Bob Grinsell, but the blue side of the chamber still came away from proceedings with two extra councillors.

The Greens were 'disappointed' not to win the Kingshurst & Fordbridge seat in particular, but did secure one in Shirley West from former independent Cllr Rosemary Sexton. And despite fielding a candidate in every ward this year, Labour are still very much out of favour in Solihull and remain unrepresented in the chamber.

A total of 17 seats were up for grabs, nine of which were defended by the councillor already in place. Eight new members were elected and begin their new role this week as representatives of their local ward.
